  26.      And these are the words of the book, which Baruch the son of Nerias, the
  27. son of Maaseas, the son of Sedekias, the son of Asadias, the son of Helkias,
  28. wrote in Babylon, in the fifth year, and in the seventh day of the month, what
  29. time as the Chaldeans took Jerusalem, and burnt it with fire. And Baruch did
  30. read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of Joakim king
  31. of Judah, and in the hearing of all the people that came to hear the book, and
  32. in the hearing of the mighty men, and of the kings' sons, and in the hearing
  33. of the elders, and in the hearing of all the people, from the least unto the
  34. greatest, even of all them that dwelt at Babylon by the river Sud.  And they
  35. wept, and fasted, ^1 and prayed before the Lord; they made also a collection
  36. of money according to every man's power: and they sent it to Jerusalem unto
  37. Joakim the high priest, the son of Helkias, the son of Salom, and to the
  38. priests, and to all the people which were found with him at Jerusalem, at the
  39. same time when he took the vessels of the house of the Lord, that had been
  40. carried out of the temple, to return them into the land of Judah, the tenth
  41. day of the month Sivan, namely, silver vessels, which Sedekias the son of
  42. Josias king of Judah had made, after that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had
  43. carried away Jechonias, and the princes, and the captives, and the mighty men,
  44. and the people of the land, from Jerusalem, and brought them unto Babylon.
  45. And they said, Behold, we have sent you money; buy you therefore with the
  46. money burnt offerings, and sin offerings, and incense, and prepare an
  47. oblation, and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God; and pray for the life
  48. of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and for the life of Baltasar his son, that
  49. their days may be ^2 as the days of heaven above the earth: and the lord will
  50. give us strength, and lighten our eyes, and we shall live under the shadow of
  51. Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and under the shadow of Baltasar his son, and
  52. we shall serve them many days, and find favour in their sight.  Pray for us
  53. also unto the Lord our God, for we have sinned against the Lord our God; and
  54. unto this day the wrath of the Lord and his indignation is not turned from us.
  55. And ye shall read this book which we have sent unto you, to make confession in
  56. the house of the Lord, upon the day of the feast and on the days of the solemn
  57. assembly.
